How I Installed the Elfa Utility Mesh Rack in This Narrow Closet
Organizing a narrow closet with a narrow door can feel frustrating when most storage solutions seem too bulky or impractical. The Elfa Utility Mesh Door & Wall Rack ended up being the perfect way to add vertical storage and truly maximize the space without overwhelming it.
Door Measurements
Before purchasing anything, I measured the door carefully to make sure the rack would actually work in this space. The door is 79 inches tall, just under 18 inches wide, and 1-5/16 inches thick (this detail will matter later when choosing between over-the-door hooks and screwing it in).
Choosing the Rail
The Elfa Mounted Standard (the vertical rail) comes in two height options: 77-3/4″ and 94-5/16″. Because my door is 79 inches tall, the 77-3/4″ rail was the perfect fit. If your door is taller, the longer rail may allow you to add even more baskets and maximize vertical storage.
Available only at The Container Store, Elfa Mounted Standards are the backbone of our Elfa Utility Door & Wall Rack Systems. Another frequent use for Mounted Standards is to maximize the space on a sloped wall, to install a single shelf in a bathroom or laundry area, or on exposed studs in garages or storage rooms.

Narrow Width Basket Options and How Many Fit on a Door
When you’re working with a narrow closet door, basket width really matters. The Elfa Utility Mesh system offers both standard and narrow basket options, and for a door just under 18 inches wide like mine, the narrow baskets were the right choice.
I chose the large narrow baskets for all six positions. The large baskets measure 13-3/4″ wide and 5-1/2″ tall, which gave me the depth and height needed to hold bulkier items like cleaning bottles and folded linens. There is also a medium basket option, which is the same width but only 2-3/4″ tall if you prefer a lower profile or lighter storage.
On the 77-3/4″ rail, I was able to fit six large baskets comfortably, with the bottom one sitting close to the floor so the vertical space is fully utilized.
If you’re using the taller 94-5/16″ rail on a taller door, you can typically fit around eight baskets comfortably, depending on spacing.
And even though they’re labeled “narrow,” they hold more than you’d expect — full-size cleaning bottles, folded linens, and everyday essentials fit easily without feeling crammed.

Hanging It Over the Door vs Screwing It In
The Elfa Utility Mesh Door & Wall Rack can either be installed using over-the-door hooks or mounted directly to the door or wall. Both options are designed to work well, but the right choice depends on your specific door and the amount of clearance you have.
Elfa offers two over-the-door hook options: a Residential version (for doors up to 1-3/8″ thick) and a Commercial version (for doors up to 1-3/4″ thick). My door measures 1-5/16″ thick, which technically falls within the residential range.
However, thickness wasn’t the only consideration. In my case, we didn’t have enough clearance at the top of the door for the hooks to sit properly. Because this closet opening is tight, adding over-the-door hardware would have interfered with how the door closed and sat within the frame.
For that reason, I chose to anchor and screw the rail directly into the hollow-core door. Mounting it this way created a cleaner, more secure installation and eliminated any potential shifting at the top of the door.
If your door has adequate clearance and you prefer a non-permanent option, the over-the-door hooks can work well. But if you’re confident in placement and want the most streamlined look, anchoring the system directly provides added stability.
Keep your essentials organized and within reach with our Elfa Utility Over-the-Door Hooks, available in two sizes to fit most standard doors.
The Elfa Utility Over the Door Hooks are available in two sizes to fit over most standard doors. Use residential hooks for the interior doors common to many homes. Commercial doors are slightly thicker than their residential counterparts and are often found in office environments or dorm rooms.
How I Anchored the Rail to a Hollow-Core Door
To mount the rail directly to the door, I used E-Z Ancor 1″ self-drilling drywall anchors (40 lb rated). They come with screws included and do not require pre-drilling.
One thing to note: the holes in the Elfa Mounted Standard rail are larger than the anchor screws, so I used a #6 washer with each screw to ensure a secure hold and proper coverage.
I was initially concerned the screws wouldn’t be long enough to pass through the rail and still grab securely, but they worked perfectly.
Because this is a hollow-core door, I used a power drill on low torque and slow speed to avoid chipping the thin outer surface. If you drive anchors too fast, it’s easy to damage the door.
Also, keep in mind that hollow-core doors have solid wood header pieces at the top and bottom. When I tried installing an anchor in the very top hole of the rail, I hit that header. In that case, I skipped the anchor and drove the screw directly into the wood, which actually created an even stronger hold.
When you’re working with a narrow closet, the key is finding a system that adjusts to your measurements, not the other way around. That’s what makes this rack such a practical option for slimmer doors that don’t leave much room to work with.
If your space feels limiting, it doesn’t mean it can’t work. Sometimes it just takes the right product to make it functional. A thoughtful Elfa rack installation can completely change how usable a tight space feels. I hope this gives you clarity as you plan your own Elfa rack installation!
